please help!! car wont go into 5th gear:(

what could be wrong? 1-4 gears are working fine, but sometimes it wont even go into fifth and when it does , you can hear a loud grinding noise...this just started a couple of days ago? im clueless, this being my first manual, what could it be? thanks alot everyone

Sounds like the synchro for 5th has took a dump.

I agree, sounds like syncro. My 2nd gear syncro is gettin real bad. If I remember correctly I was quoted about $900 to rebuild the transmission, but you can but a used on from a junk yard for less than that. Check the For Sale section cause I know one person I still trying to sell thiers for around $300.

if you have a warranty, it should cover that.

Yeah, I can't get my bird into 5th :D
Wait a minute, I've got an auto.
Well if it is under warrenty go to the dealer immediately.
If not do a search in the general section under 'salvage yards'
I called them yesterday and asked for used auto's for my bird
I found one for $300-350
I found another for $500 with only 37,000 miles on it. Billy graham's yard

5th gear synchro blocker ring is shot.
you can have just this part repaired but you'd be jsut as well having the whole trans overhauled since they'll be inside with the shafts out anyway.

thanks for all the help guys, the car isnt covered by warranty cause i already put 50k on it.... i dropped it off at a transmission place today and they said the problem is not external...and hes going to open up the transmission tommorow...if it is the sychro ill probably go online and pick up the part...i just dont understand how 5th gear would mess up and not any others.

Watch out for them overcharging and ensure that is really the problem.

I could be just a linkage adjustment.

Mind you a different ball park but I had 1979 Camaro with a four speed Muncie and a Hurst shifter. From out of nowhere, whenever I would try to enter fourth gear, the tranny would grind into gear or not enter at all. It was a quick fix, linkage adjustment.
