Ok, I've been searching to find stuff, but I can't find anything to answer my question. My question is how do you fix the speedo on a 96 M5 if you put 3.73's in? How much would it cost to just buy one of those dash computers that tell you your speed? Also, how is ABS affected? Do I need anything besides the 3 series gears kit and LSD? Thanks for any help on this guys.
The following stuff is a list of the parts that you will need when doing a ring and pinion job: Italicized Part numbers listed are dealer items
Ring gear
Pinion
ABS Reluctor wheel - 26029185
Differential drive pinion gear shim - has to be determined when the old one comes out
Differential drive pinion gear bearing spacer - 9785792
inner pinion bearing - Timken number HM89249
Outer pinion bearing - Timken number M86649
Differential drive pinion gear nut - 9783762
Differential drive pinion gear washer - 517900
Differential housing gasket - Felpro number RDS55072
Ultra Black RTV Sealant for the gasket
1.45 quarts of gear oil
LSD additive from dealership
As far as the speedo problem, you could either have is reprogrammed by someone like Ed Wright or get a new speedo drive gear and speedo driven ger for the VSS and take the tranny apart to put 2 small little gears in. Your decision...something like $350 for the reprogramming and about $20 for the 2 small gears, but a whole lot of time and a huge headache.
The HUD style speedos run at a few hundred bucks from what I have seen.
The ABS will not be affected unless you leave the new reluctor ring off.
That should be it....let me know if you have any more questions.
