BOO 3.42 gears!

The numerically-higher gears should ward off some of that high stall torque converter slippage that you "feel" at rpms lower that what the converter is rated for. I say "feel" because I don't know if the gears actually affect the converter slippage. Howeever, I did read that numerically-lower gears would cause a converter to stall higher. In other words, a 3000-stall converter with 3.08 gears would stall higher that with 3.42 gears.
Oh, let's really confuse you. If you've done exhaust work, you'll stall higher, intake work, you'll stall lower. I've heard until today that get the 3.42's first.
The problem for me is that i dont' have the money right now... but i might be able to manage the converter and i'm getting impatient
I should just save up and get them both at the same time next spring... :(1997 silver Camaro RS
|T-Type Powered|
Looking for a local F-Body club in K/W, Ontario, Canada?

Were these used gears or brand new?
Did you count the teeth on the ring and pinion and divide them to make sure it is the right gears?
I loved mine.
Well, the lsd sends power to both tires so traction should improve.
The more gear and converter however should make it more torquey off the line and traction should be a problem.
Count the teeth on the ring set they removed.

ok ok, so i gave it another day or so, and i guess i can feel the difference afterall. i tried to heat up the tires again, and sure enough, when in first gear (i have an auto), i lit up both tires every now and again i can feel the extra push from the gears... i guess i was just expecting more of a difference for a $1000 mod. oh well... still very worthwhile. for anyone else, i would do more research as to either 3.42s or 3.73s if looking for "major" difference. hope this helps.

already did that... not to say anything bad about SLP, but i called them, and said that we did everything according to "their instructions" yet they said "oh, thats b/c you have a V6" ... i said, "no shine-ola", then, they said that i have to find a service manual to my car, and find the speedo wires myself and hook it up according to the manual, not their instructions, b/c the instructions are only for the LS1... why they don't tell us that in the first place, or provide us w/ the correct instructions in the first place... who knows, so just beware1999 Pontiac Firebird W68 Ram Air
3800 Series II V6 A4
Appearance:
Black, Ram Air Hood, Ground Effects, T-Tops, Silver Decals by Firebat,
Stock 16\" Chrome 5-Star Wheels, Chrome WS6 Dual Exhaust Tips
Performance:
Yank Super Thruster 3500 Torque Converter, 3.42 gears w/ OEM Zexel Torsen LSD, Jet Stage II chip, 180* Thermostat, B&M Transmission Cooler, Whisper Lid, K&N, Free Ram Air, 1/2\" Raised Airbox, Custom 2.5\" Catback Exhaust w/ Flowmaster 80 Series Muffler, Nitto 555R Drag Radials (back), Goodyear Eagle GSC 245/50ZR16 (front)

It cost you $1000???? Howd that happen. My gears and takeoff lsd together only cost me $150. Does that mean that the install kit and labor are gunna run me 850???? :(

gears-200, lsd-100, reluctor wheel-30, install kit-150, recalibrator-200, labor-300... sounds like a steal when you see gears online for 200, but when you add it all up, you've got yourself an expensive, but worthwhile mod1999 Pontiac Firebird W68 Ram Air
3800 Series II V6 A4
Appearance:
Black, Ram Air Hood, Ground Effects, T-Tops, Silver Decals by Firebat,
Stock 16\" Chrome 5-Star Wheels, Chrome WS6 Dual Exhaust Tips
Performance:
Yank Super Thruster 3500 Torque Converter, 3.42 gears w/ OEM Zexel Torsen LSD, Jet Stage II chip, 180* Thermostat, B&M Transmission Cooler, Whisper Lid, K&N, Free Ram Air, 1/2\" Raised Airbox, Custom 2.5\" Catback Exhaust w/ Flowmaster 80 Series Muffler, Nitto 555R Drag Radials (back), Goodyear Eagle GSC 245/50ZR16 (front)

finally... i tried to spin the tires to make sure the LSD at least works, but not only could i not spin both tires, but i couldn't
Batman (Ryan) had the same problem w/ his car. He couldnt spin the tires either. And I thought maybe he didnt know how, so I tried and it didnt work for me either. I dont know what happened after that day tho, whether its still like that or not. You might wanna ask him for what happened w/ his LSD.2000 Black T/A M6 343rwhp 349rwtq
11.94 @ 118 60\'1.79 Stock Internal
http://www.cardomain.com/id/demonicbird00
AIM: W68Firebird97
R.I.P... Nope, don't buy the install kit. Let the shop buy the parts it needs. Those kits are more like for a complete rebuild. Lots of parts the shop won't use, and will end up adding to someone's car that needs it. Probably how I got my few parts that needed replacing. On my car they replaced the pinion seal, and a few other parts that didn't add up to 20 bucks.1998 Firebird 3800 Series II, A4
Direct-Flo Lid,K&N Filter,DEE TB Spacer,TPS-TEC,ZZP Mini-AFC,Raised and Cutout Airbox 7mm,BMR STB & Boxed LCAs,KYB AGX Shocks,Drilled/Slotted Rotors,180* Thermo,2.5\" Catco Cat,Dynomax 2.75\" custom catback,Kumho Ecstas/245,Jet Stage 2,3.42,Edge Racing 2870 Stall,B&M Tranny Cooler,B&M Deep Tranny Pan,LSD,AAM Girdle,1LE DS,NX Wet Kit,MSD DIS-4,MSD Blaster Coil Packs,Taylor Spiro Pro 8mm Wires,NGK TR6\'S gapped .045,ZZP UD WP Pulley,SLP Fan Switch,TT II\'s
N/A: 15.6342 @ 88.44 (On stock converter.
