  • Yet another SES Light

I was on my way home tonite(it is about 30mi from where i live to home) and my SES light came on on the way there. This is the fourth time this has happened to me. The last three times that it has happened the code has been a transmission slip. The first time that it happened we had the transmission flushed and filled and gaskets replaced and filters and the like(not a rebuild, just a clean). But the last few times it has happened, the fluid is perfectly normal. Any suggestions as to what it might be? My dad thinks that the torque converter is making noise. Could that be the problem? a busted converter?

need to pull codes to see. faulty tc is not likely to give you that code. although, if tc clutch is not locking up properly and is slipping too much, the pcm might detect the difference between rpm and expected tx output shaft speed as significant slippage. so it is possible but not probable. most likely cause of p1870 (i think that's the tx component slipping code) is faulty pressure control solenoid.

would that also cause noise if that solenoid was faulty?

If i could get a decent recording i could let you listen to it. It is an always occuring sound. it's especially noticeable when sitting still beside a wall or driving a long a wall. if you put your ear down behind either front wheel you can really hear it. it literally sounds like a rattle.

i just noticed yesterday that the noise is even more pronounced when the car is in drive. Even my little brother could hear it.

              Any thoughts?

I couldn't hear that noise in the recordings sorry. Take it to a transmission shop and get an estimate. You don't have to get it done, just go in for possible work.

faulty pc solenoid would not likely cause rattling type noise.

i'm thinking heat shield for exhaust system as the possible cause of your noise... i'd have to listen to it to be sure but get under the car and smack some of the heat shields and see if it sounds similar to what you're hearing.

That could very well be the cause of my noise. however, i am noticing a lack of power until the higher rpms and gears. It usually is rather groggy until about 3rd gear and around 2-3000 rpms. What the heck?

its a TCCS.. torqu converter somthing solenoid. it gets loose in its sleve and gets stuck or somthign. usually requires a teardown, and then they hone out the passage, and then do some other stuff.. its a PITA... I have the same thing, i have the hard 1-2 I can live with it for now, once i get home from school I am getting the dealership to rebuild it. i dont think it will hurt it if i rive it for a few weeks. i have actually had this since like december, the dealership back home knows whats wrong, but the ones in MA are idiots...
