My firebird has the crappy 3.08 gears. That's what GU4 means on the door sticker right?? How big a deal is to change the rear end gear, and is it worth it. Gears are pretty cheap and i was just wondering what i'd be getting myself into by changing them.

Yeah, GU4 is 3.08's. Upgrading to 3.42's outta drop a noticeable amount off your 1/4th, cause they give you more low-end. Your gas mileage will go down a slight bit if you travel on highways a lot, but it's no big deal.
I wouldn't mess with installing new gears yourself unless you're dead sure you know what you're doing.Kyle M<br />--------------<br /><a href=\"http://grdws6.netfirms.com\" target=\"_blank\">2002 Trans Am WS6</a> (silver, A4) - lid, cutout, stage 3 shift kit, 12 bolt, vig 3200, tranny cooler, bmr sfc/stb, torq thrust ii. <b>12.688 @ 106.47mph -=- 1.756 60\'</b>

GrdLock is right man. I wouldn't mess with gears unless you know what your doing and have the ability to set the pinion depth correctly you'll be much better off. And 3.42's will be much better all around. I also have the 3.08's and can say I love the gas mileage, but hate it when a car with 3.42's hands me my a$$. You can find them for low 200s if you look around. For the exact parts that you'll need look at my sig at the gear install guide. I have a brand new set of 3.42 GM Motives if you want for $170 plus shipping.
