Are you asking for advice reasons or just curious about who has done it? I did mine own at school. They have all of the correct tools for setting backlash and preload on the crush sleeve.
Just make sure you get the most accurate inch pound torque wrench that you can find. I don't mean something from autozone, sears, etc. I do mean snap-on. The measurement for the preload of the pinion gear is the most crucial one in the reassembly. I think its like 12-24 lbs/in for new gears and it has to be dead on. If not, the least of your problems would be noisy gears. What kind of gears are you installing?
thanks for the link clark. & i have 8 snap-on tq wrenches so no problems there. however, i've decided to take the car to a tranny shop to get it done...albeit i'm going to pay lots of attention & perhaps attempt this the next time i need a gear change.
jerriko, i'm going from 3.23 to 4.11...that should speed things up a bit :D
