  • Need some help on trannies

I tore up my trannies last weekend and since I found out it was going to be well over 1000 to fix it I decided to get a used one: I had a friend pick this up for me while I was at work. (I have a 97 camaro)

The guy said this was out of a 99. Looks like this is one from a 3.4 instead of a 3.8. There is no place to install the slave cylindar... I had to turn in the old one or I would compare them. Am I right this is the wrong tranny or an I missing something?
I can take more pictures if needed...

I don't know if you are interested in rebuilding your current tranny, but I am going through the same thing right now.
$450 in parts, $200 to install, and another *possible* 200 or so for a torque converter if I need it... and 10 qrts. of synthetic fluid. This is for a rebuild with all of the BEST possible parts... stock rebuild will be waaaay less.

With a used tranny you never know what you're going to get... just look at mine. 71k miles and I don't abuse the thing... bought my car used and the fluid never really looked great it in. I put a tranny cooler on and changed the fluid every 6-9k miles and luckily it lived as long as it did.

If you read his post and pictures you will notice he is talking about a T5, not a 4L60(E), so your just talking about something completely unrelated. I dont know where you are getting your info, but $450 in parts for a rebuild is not the "BEST" parts you can get, but it would be a decent rebuld. It all depends on the builder, not so much the parts, unless you are looking to hold a lot of power.

      Back on topic...

The slave isnt there for sure, I kind of forget how the newer ones look, but that doesent look right... I'm not 100% sure though, but I THINK the 3.4 T5's have external slaves, which would answer your question. Id be really weary of the place you got it from now if you got a cracked one first, and now the wrong one out of what was supposed to be a 99, sounds fishy to me.

I did a little reaserch and I'm pretty sure you got a 93-95 T5. If you look at the pic below you will see a 93-95 T5, a 96-02, and what they sold you. Notice the splines on the tail housing of the 96+? Yours doesent have them, and looks just like the older ones. Now someone just has to confirm they are not compatible...

          </font>[/QUOTE]Sorry, I can't tell them by pic...
I guess I could have specified which parts I was talking about, its mostly the clutches, steels and stuff, not too many hard parts.

That kit right there. Guess it doesn't matter since he doesn't have an auto.

What is wrong with your current tranny Linxs?

Don't quote me on this but I think the trans you got came off of something with a 4 cylinder. I ran into this problem when I was gathering parts for my conversion. I bought a bellhousing from an online junkyard. I already was told that the bellhousing was off of a 2.5L 4 banger but I was also told that the bellhousing was compatible with a 60* V6. Only problem is that the 2.5L doesn't have the same slave cylinder as a 2.8 (3.4L or 3800). The bellhousing I got looks identical to the one you have pictured. I would definitely not do business with the place you bought that trans from.

What is wrong with your current tranny Linxs?
Well, lets put it this way, the short version....

I red lined 2nd gear and poped it into 3rd gear going 4K+ RPM's(not sure exactly what the RPMS were) heard my tires chirp then a loud bang and a constant clanging after that. I have a picture of the gear that broke I'll post it latter. My rebuild will be well over 1000+ (For that kind of money I would just buy a new one). So I am looking to get a low mileage used one. The first one I got had a crack in it at the bottom drain plug. A friend picked the above tranny up for me yesterday. Now here we are....

Thanks, That's exactly what I was looking for! Honestly, I do not care if they are conpatable or not it's not what I was told I was buying. I just needed to get my ducks in a row before I called the guy back this morning.
