  • I got 3.42's?!?!

Heres the deal, (my car has about 260,000miles). Clutch disc spring broke, etc.
    Changed that... car almost ready.
Decided to change the rear diff fluid.
Went all good, then a noticed some numers on the ring gear.
It looked like this: '3.42 XXXXXXXX' where the x's would be an 8 digit part number. The gears looked to be in mint condition (but they whine a bit.. - not installed right I guess) and thats unusual for a vehicle with 400,000km. I guess they were changed out. My car is a non-Y87, and doesnt have LDS.

Does that mean I got 3.42's for sure?
I see no other reason as to why 3.42 would be stamped into the side of the gear, lol.

Also, how the hell are you suposed to refill the trans fluid on a M5? Its imposble to get a bottle up their, let alone a funel. Do I need to buy a hand pump or something stupid like that?

the best way to check is your door codes. it would be extremely odd to find 3.42s in a manual car, even a Y87

    GU4 AXLE REAR, 3.08 RATIO

    GU5 AXLE REAR, 3.23 RATIO

    GU6 AXLE REAR, 3.42 RATIO

    G80 AXLE POSITRACTION, REAR

you will need a hand pump to refill your trans fluid.

I just recently changed my tranny oil. Go to advanced or auto zone and they have a siphon pump designed for this. Dump the recommended amount of liquid into some big container. Make sure that this container is higher up than the heigth of your tranny. Unscrew the top bolt out of the 2 bolts that have some orange stuff on the threads. Follow the directions on the package for which tube to put where. Should the correct tube into the screw hole in the tranny. Keep pumping away at the pump until the ATF starts to leak out....it is REALLY easy if you have 2 people, one to hold the tube against the tranny, and the other to pump...n e other questions, just e-mail me!

i just take the shifter out and fill it there. its so much faster. read the manual and find out how much is needed. and pour that much in there. put it together and go.
