  • Prices on rearend/gear swap

The dealerships here refuse to flash the PCM, so a straight-up rearend swap to 3.42's and LSD is out of the question. Right now I have a 96 A4 w/3.08's and an open differential. From my understanding going from an open differential to a LSD has nothing to do with the need to reprogram, the change in gears is why you need to reprogram.(Correct this if I am wrong) So I decided to just get a rear axle from an automatic Z28 or T/A and switch out the 2.73's with my 3.08's.(yes I know 3.08's are sluggish but I don't care too much about performance, I just want the better traction with an LSD) How much do you think it will cost me to have the axle swap done as well as switching out the 2.73's and putting in my stock 3.08's?

My gear and LSD install was about $300 and I supplied all the parts. The gears are most of that cost. Since you would be paying for a new rear-end and posi unit plus cost for gear install, I would recommend doing the 3.42's and posi in your existing rear end, get what you really want. I ran mine without programming for over 6 months. only problem is that your speedo is off slightly. Dig up a 97 pcm somewhere and send it to TSP for a tune and correction for the gears.

Thats what I would do as well. If you are gonna do it, might as well do it right. If you are not too keen on paying for the install, you could look for a rear end with 3.42s and LSD already installed and put in an entirely new rear end. Then save money and send a PCM to TSP.

Viper04af, you did a rear axle swap, and switched out the gears in the LSD with your stock 3.23's, right? How much did that cost you?
