  • Automatic with a 4.10, what is going to happen?

I know this has been talked over many times, but everyone has a manual, except me. Anyways, I will be getting a rear-end from a friend so I can convert to rear discs and the LSD, but it has a 4.10 gear it. So, assuming that I will be installing a computer from fastchip at the same time, what is going to happen with those 4.10s? Being that the car is mostly stock (air, exhaust, chip are only mods) and running 245 series BFGoodrich T/A tires, am I going to get traction from them? The car is mostly street but its way to slow for me right now, and it only sees track time once or twice a year, and highway time once or twice a month. What is going to happen to my gas millage, passing-abilities, 0-60 times and 1/4 times? I currently have the 3.4 with 3.23 gears. Also, what, if any, performance benefit will I get from having the LSD now?

    Thanks,
    Steve

I'm not sure if your chip remove the speed limiter... If it doesn't you'll ne to get that remove. I am still looking for a new rear I have passed up 2-3 4.10 rear eand due to my camaro's alter ego is a daily driver.

its gonna be a lot faster off the line, and you will lose some top end. gas mileage wont be affected THAT much, but you may lose like 3-5mpg highway and 2-3 city.

Your speedometer will be off and the rmps will be off so that makes the shifting off. Don't know how you will be able to correct the shifting.

You won't have any traction issues, so don't worry about that. They will really **** with your guages though. If you have computer plans (remove limiter, adjust shift points, correct speedo etc,,) then go for it. If you have posi, off the line will be nice. Up top (45+) it sucks..but that may be due to the engine. Your odometer/tripometer will also be off unless you adjust for the gears. More miles will be added on than what you are really driving.

programming will definitely be needed for the 4.10's. u will definitely want to do something for ur rear suspension after u get the gears. trust me, w/ just intake, exhaust, and chip, I needed rear suspension for traction off the line w/ just my 3.42's and LSD on 255-50 tires. lca's will definitely help w/ this. I dead hooked off the line with the lca's on before I put in my TC.

The word 'definite' should be changed to something like, 'recommended'. You don't need reprogramming or any suspension change, but it would be nice to have those done as well.

My computer will have the revised programming for the 4.10 gear if I decide to keep it. However I have just decided not to keep it, Im going to go through the trouble of putting a 3.73 in it from SLP. So, as a new question, any tips for a first timer putting a new gear in? Also, what kind of improvment could I see with that gear in my car? 10th, 2 10ths, 3 10ths, 4 10ths of a second in 1/4? How about 0-60?

Don't put the gear in yourself, it needs to be professionaly done. The spacing needs to be precise or major problems will occur.

Shifts will be all over the place too.

Depending on if his car is a 3.4 or 3.8. If it is a 3.4, it won't hit the speed limiter in the 1/4. I doubt it would hit the limiter if it were a 3.8. It would depend on what modifications he has done..If he's running nitrous, than he would want computer work done. If it's an intake/exhaust / stock car, than there is not a definite cause for reprogramming.

OK, new question now...any one know what shops charge for installing a new gear and doing a rebuild kit? If not exact pricing, whats good, too good to be true and way over priced in your opinions?

it's easy to hit 120+ in a 3.8. I was able to do it w/ just a lid, filter, and cat-back w/ my 3.42 gears.

...The key to my whole point is "in the 1/4 mile"
