• A4 to M5!

Ok there is a 2001 Firbird(NBM) that has 20,000 miles on it that has a M5 in it. the motor and stuff is still good but it's hit hard in the back. How hard would it be to change tranny's. the motor has something wrong with it he said. It runs but he thinks the motor will not last long. how hard would it be to swap?

I'd stick with the auto if you're serious about drag racing. Put in a good stall converter and you'll be beating 5 speeds with the same mods. Just my opinion. Now for every day driving the 5 speed is fun, but for drag racing, autos really are the way to go.

*cough* I drive a 5 speed and run a second faster than you *cough*

I'm saying that you can ask any REAL drag racer, and they will tell you that you can go faster with an auto, buck for buck. If you want a dyno queen, get a stick car. Slow cars, fast cars...doesn't matter, watch at the track and the auto cars with the right converter will always be in front by 60', and if they have the same mods as the 5 speed, will almost always keep the lead until 1320'.

Yea its true autos are better in the end.. man can't shift as fast or constant as a machine period.

and Matt your also more modded, and more experienced then me lol. I have one trip to the track under my belt. How many you got now? ;)

Yea I know =) My times are on a 1second slow day (every car there was running 1-.5 seconds slower than their normal times. Plus I had worse tires, no suspension mods, broken tranny mount, slipping clutch, wheel hop, almost 20 less horsepower and some other things lol. I'll get ya, if I ever start making money again that is..

Btw. Stick with the m5 if your doing it for fun.. if you want to compete yea a4 is your choice.

$250 for everything is a heck of a deal, as long as it's in good condition. If it were hit hard in the rear becareful that the driveshaft wasn't jammed into the transmission.
Here's a couple things you'll need:
Clutch, pedals (which is a pain in the *** to get on and off unless you take the seat out), tranny of course, linkage cable, center console from a manual, and there's probably something else but it's not coming to mind.
I've never personally changed a F-body tranny, but on a 95 GT Mustang we didn't have to change the computer to one that was in a manual before. The only problems we ran into was the speedo and tach are off by a lot for some reason and no more cruise control.
Unless you're going to be hardcore in drag racing I would go with the manual. Manuals are just funner to drive in my opinion, but it's your car and you should do what YOU want to do. Good luck with the swap if you give it a go!
