  • Still havent fixed the problem

ok, back to my loud squeeling noise that starts at about 30-35 mph. The first garage I took it to told me it was the bearings and/ or gears in the rear end. Sounded logical and consistant with the noise. $800 later I have posi gears and a completely rebuilt rear-end. Now, i get lots of traction, but still have the noise. So, my next guess is its the carrier bearing in the ****ty 2-piece d/s or possibly the U-joint ( i took this apart a few weeks ago to change tranny filter/ fluid and it looked fine to my untrained eye) OR is my tranny itself making this god-awful skrieching noise? it shifts fine, no slipping....
guess im getting a little confused here.

I had a nasty squeaking on the rear driver's side disk brake, and it turned out to be a bent axle. Replaced it, and the squeak went wawy.

I bought another (disk) rear for my camaro, and the rear came with everything including the axles, and the one was bent. I used an axle from my drum brake rear, and the annoying squeak went away.

Best place I can think of is ebay. Make sure you get 28 spline.

If they rebuilt the rear and charged you that much, they should have replaced the bearings too, they are cheap parts. Find out if they did this, it is important.

i just talked with the guy after the fact, told hime its still squeeking and he said they gave me the new wheel bearings back in the box... they would have changed them, but said it would be a waste to put new bearings on worn shafts. told me to start hunting for new shafts.
                guess thats my problem.

So basically they ripped you off for 800 bucks when they knew the problem was the axle bearings? A bad bearing will eat up the axle, they had to see the worn axle when they took it out. I would call and raise hell with them.

yeah... im just a little pissed. its not entirely wasted money cause now i have the gear and posi setup i wanted, but i dont exaclty have the money to fix things that arent broken. at least the gears are dialed in correctly.... ill rip the axles out and change them and the outer bearings myself..... it never ends (hence the new sig).
