• Another Gear Question

I have been searching the board and havn't found a definate answer about changing gears. I will be changing the gears in my 2002 3.8L Camaro from its stock 3.23's but I don't know which is better, 3.42 or 3.73. I daily drive my car about 40 miles a day and race a few friends and others on the side. Can someone help me and give me some good advice. Thanks!!

3.42 would be easier to deal with. You can get your PCM recalibrated by any dealer, or buy a computer from a Y87 F-body. You won't loose as much gas mileage with 3.42's opposed to 3.73's.

Cons - Going from 3.23 to 3.42 you probably won't notice a difference in performance.

I would recommend higer than 3.42's though..3.73 or 4.10 would be nice.

Since you have an M5, you wouldnt have to worry about a y87 computer. You could just get a simple speedo recalibrator, or a lot of mechanics nowadays can do speedo recalibration. You'd notice a good difference going to 3.73s, I doubt 3.42s would be enough of a diffence to be truly worth it. Plus with a manual, you have a lower overdrive gear so 3.73s on the highway will still be fine. Autos are the guys that need to contemplate this idea a lot since we lose our shift points in a gear swap, I'd get 3.73s if I were you.

Thank you guys. I think that I will go with the 3.73's. It seems that they would make more of a difference and the gas mileage doesn't seem like it would be that bad,It's not a real big concern of mine anyway.

            Some say it's .72, others say .74. The 4L60E's 4th gear is .70.

Ya AlienInv8r I don't know where u got that information but 5th gear would rev higher than an automatic transmission...Vaahrooom I'd go with a 3.42 ratio, just my .02
