I know from my searches that LSD questions are way too common, so I'm sorry if people are angry with me for this post, but I couldnt find the answer to all my questions. I have the 3.42's on my 2002 v6 A4. I know I dont have LSD cause there's no g80 number and certainly not y87 package. My questions are as follows:

1, will LSD help in snow/ice driving as winter is coming and I'd like to make driving as easy as possible.

2, From searching I know that the SLP place has this
http://slponline.com/view_product.as...&SHOWEMAIL=Off

as the right LSD take-off part.

Do I need a new ABS reluctor ring? If so, where do I find that and what part # would it be?

3, I'm planning on having a shop do it, dont know which one yet, would I need to order anything else?

Thanks a lot for the help, again I'm sorry for the annoyance of another LSD question.

did you get the 3.42's installed? i dont think any ever came from gm without also having the lsd as part of the Y87 package.
anyway, if you have the 3.42's already, then you should have the correct abs reluctor ring. all you need is the posi unit, rear end fluid and posi additive and a new gasket unless you want to reuse your old one. should actually be an easy install that could be done yourself as long as your not messing w/ gears.

i bought the car used, but the orginal sticker was still in the glove box, the 3.42's were installed in the factory, but not the LSD. Dont ask me why, I'm guessing it was specially ordered that way. Although on the sticker the 3.42's are listed as "no charge" so who knows?

different ppl say different things about that, so i cant answer, sorry

Yep, thats the one you want

you are fine with what you have

3, I'm planning on having a shop do it, dont know which one yet, would I need to order anything else?

as was said above, it can be done yourself, with new fluid (additive isn't needed as its not a clutch based LSD, but i have it regardless, just to be safe), and a new gasket

I recently put a Torsen in my car and just yesterday while pulling out of the parking lot at work, I spun out and did a 180 in the middle of the road. It was wet and there were leaves on the road, and before I knew it I was turned around. What you have to remember is that before with an open diff, most of the time your inside rear tire will be the only one spinning around a turn, your outer wheel will be "free" and keep you from coming around. With the Torsen, your outer wheel will also be turning, and if it breaks free, it is much easier to bring the rear around. It is safer overall if you dont break traction on the rear, and the "threshold" of traction is higer with the LSD, but if you lose traction it gets real loose real fast. Plain and simple, BE CAREFUL! Lord_V is right. I also added the Zexel take-off (did it myself with help from a friend, took about 4 hours) and although you have more grip from 2 tires, when they break loose the rear is going to slide around. If you're turning it's going to want to go in the opposite direction. Even in a straight line the rear will typically follow the grade of the road.

Bottom line, if you add LSD you'll learn countersteer and controlled wheel spin.

My install went fairly smooth, up until I broke a shim trying to hammer it back in place. My recommendation is to take the new carrier and both shims and stuff it all back up in at the same time. Hammer on the carrier body rather than the shims.

Okay, so it seems that the open differential is better when both tires are on a slippery surface but if only one tire is on a slippery surface then the limited slip diff. is better for traction.
I can tell that the difference seems to be a personal one, but in winter ice/snow which would be the safest/eaisest to drive most of the time? Again, i'm no stranger to snow driving, I'm just wondering if I should wait until after this winter to put on the LSD, or do it before the ice/snow gets here. any/all opinions are welcomed. Thank you!

get the lsd, is fun to spin both tires. also give yourself a little time to learn how to go easy on the gas when cornering i used to go to an EMPTY parking lot at nights when raining and practice myself doing donuts, launching hard and cornering, just to know the capabilities of my new diff. you got better launch, but remember the rear would go loose so easy if you give her enough gas,is a matter of knowing when to push her hard or no.
enjoy and drive carefully

If you absolutely have to drive your Fbody in the snow, with an open rear you have a greater chance of plain out getting stuck because you're only spinning one wheel. With LSD you've got 2 tires now scrambling for traction, however when both loose it, the rear end of the car will decide to take off in one direction or another.

I live in PA and I've driven my car for several years in the snow, both with an open rear and with the LSD. I got stuck in my own driveway once with the open rear... haven't gotten stuck yet with the LSD. But when the roads are completely covered it's an adventure.

I prefer the LSD over an open rear for snow. It helps to put a few bags of sand, ice-melt, anything heavy that will add a hundred or two pounds to the rear. Also keep your gas tank full, as there's more than a hundred pound difference between an empty and a full tank.

I have heard that with the Zexel-Torsen LSD if you are having trouble getting going in the snow hit your brakes a little which will give the LSD some torque to play with since it is a torque biased type LSD.

I believe this is from the zexel-torsen web site, but I would suggest confirming this before taking my word for it as it is just something I think I read.

The LSD should be better in the snow IMHO. Especially if you also have traction control.

Any Fbodys from 86-89 with the 2.8L V6 came factory with an open rear end and 3.42 gears. 3.1s came with 3.23s and 3.4s with 3.08s. GM did that for some fuel economy.
