3.42's for automatics or if you drive 65+ a lot. 3.73's for manuals or if you're mostly city driving. Your top gear will change around 400rpm for every gear step. Going from a stock 3.08 to a 3.42 will mean around 800rpm faster at highway speed.

          3.73s
I am getting my 3.73s put in Sunday and I was worried about the same things you were. 70mph at like 2500rpm isn't that bad... plus, I've found my car likes the higher RPMs. Drive 225 miles home at 90 and my mileage is better than when I go 75-80 lol.

no one has mentioned an LSD yet, you'll more than likely want that also with your gear purchase. They run right at about $100 from SLP, and about the same for a used one too. I picked up my 3.42's used off ebay out of an SS for way cheaper than new, and they still look to be in excellent condition. I never installed them though because I think I Wanna do 3.73s instead. I do a lot of highway driving also, but as long as you take care of your car I think they'll be fine. But anyways dont forget about the LSD cuz you'll want that new found torque going to both wheels, rather than just squealing one tire.

an LSD will put the power your making to both wheels. Right now if you try to burn out, you'll most likely only be able to spin one tire (if you even can, I can't even burn out with stock 3.08s and my heavy rims) But once you get the gears done, they're basically gonna multiply the torque going to your tires. So rather than having it all go to one tire with the open differential you have now, it'll go to both your back wheels and let you have much better launches. LSD=limited Slip differential, it's similar to posi-traction, since it lets both wheels turn on take-off. Basically with the current open differential, you'll squeal that one tire all day long, you add an LSD and it will make much more efficient use of your torque and available traction.
It's not necessary, but you will definately want it down the road after going through only one rear tire wearing out and the other being fine. Since you're in the exact same spot when installing the gears, they usually go hand-in-hand and it's better to do it right the first time anyways.

i installed the 3.42 gears and lsd from slp. the torsen diff (lsd) was $99 slp part# 64501T and the gears were $239.95 slp part# 64048. also i think you would need a abs reluctor ring don't know the part number, but this is for the abs to work (very important), the mechanic got the gears install kit for $119 and the install was like $500.
you can go with any brand and i used 3.42 becuase of the freeway mileages, but if you won't drive that much go with 3.73. also get the lsd, is not required, but recommended and more if you install those 3.73's, you won't want to spin one tire when launching hard.
you would be happy with this upgrade.

wow i assumed these cars stock had LSD-guess i was wrong--anyways if u want anymore info on differentials or gears in general go to www.hostuffworks.com and do a search-i thought it was definitely interesting to take a look at the animations and drawings they have there-maybe u already know all the basics but there is still a lot of interesting things to be learned there i think

and in one post i saw go with 3.73's if u are a 5-speed or stay off the highways mostly--well i have a 5-speed but i also have to drive a decent amount on the highway-are 3.73's still best?
