I was just trying to replace my vehicle speed sensor and when I pulled the sensor off, I got a nice warm bath in transmission fluid. Is this normal? Right now I'm kinda pissed, and really confused. All my Haynes manual said is that you have to unscrew a bolt and disconnect the line to the PCM, it failed to mention that transmission fluid would pour out. I have a 94 3.4 with a T5.

I am not a big fan of Haynes manuals - too many missing details. I have one and it's somewhat helpful, but too much missing and incorrect info. And Chilton's are worse - in my opinion. I suggest ponying up the bucks for a GM shop manual.
Second, if the Haynes guys actually did this job their test car was probably on a lift, so the car was level to the ground. If you lifted the front of the car with a jack and put stands under it, this would cause the tranny fluid to move toward the back of the tranny hence your bath :mad:
Either that or they were just plain ignorant and forgot to tell you the fluid would leak out.
I am not sure where the VSS is located on the transmission, but you should be able to look in the manual and figure out how to refill the tranny and where it sould be "full". I would've just replaced the fluid, but I really don't have any way to do it. It's a standard, so the place where you fill it is on the transmission. If it was an automatic I really wouldn't have had any problems. I went ahead and drove it to a really good local transmission shop today and they got the sensor put on and filled up the fluid, and it only cost $20, so everything turned out fine. The mechanic told me it's alright to drive with low fluid, but just not for extended periods of time.
