• Best all around gears?

I have the unfortunate luck of having 3.08s in my car. I was just wondering what the best all around gears for me would be. I need more low end cause I cant even rip a shot. Its quite sad. However I dont want something thats going to effect my fuel economy too badly. I really need better acceleration. I have a 98 A4 if that makes a difference.

well 3.23's would be a step up but 3.42's with a posi or lsd would be a great step.

I would have to agree with zlightning. I feel 3.42's are the way to go when you want all around performance and drivability. I know what you mean about the 3.08's I really do. I love them on the high way but when it comes to off the line acceleration. Well.....lets not even talk about how bad I lose against a car with 3.42's.

Hey, do 3.23s on a M5 start with an overall taller ratio for its first gear(as in better for acceleration) than the 3.42s in an A4 in their first gear? (when multipling the first gear ratio with the rear gear ratio) or does the A4 win in this?

BigEd I think your correct about the A4 with 3.42's having the taller gear in first. I mean 1st gear in an A4 is 3.06 so multiplied by the 3.42 rear that's 10.4652. The M5 I believe has a 1st gear of 2.95 (or something like that) and multiplied by 3.23 that would only be 9.5285. But that's only 1st gear. The M5 takes the lead after we go into 2nd and definitely by 3rd.

Actually, first gear on the M5 is 3.75, and 3.75 multiplied by 3.23 is 12.1125. You are correct about the 3.06 first gear in the A4 though.

1st gear is a 3.75! WOW!!! I didn't realize that they had better gearing in 1st. Man now I want a 5-speed!

I would have to say 3.42 w/ LSD.

unless you need that 118mph, i'd go with 3.42s LSD too tho
