  • Help me solve an argument!

Whats faster to keep your car in D or OD, when your going around 60 to 100? But if I am messing with someone go 60 or more I like it in OD cause it has alot of kick to it. I got into an argument about this question and would love for someone to answer it for me.

Well what good is it to have the two gears. And you didnt have to be a *** about it. I thought that when you were going down the interstate or something OD was better on gas so it has to be keeping it at a lower rpm so its got to be some diff.

As long as you have your foot on the floor, it is going to shift in the lowest gear possible.

If you are not giving it WOT and you don't allow the engine to hit the redline, the transmission should stay in whatever gear you put it in. The second you hit redline - it's now in the next gear.
I don't have an auto, but I imagine the behave like that.

Leaving it in D on the highway is retarded. It'll keep it in a lower gear and you'll get considerably worse gas mileage.

If you're on the highway and want to get on it, just punch the gas and your auto will do all the work. Don't need to ever really worry about selecting the gears unless you're Autocrossing probably.

Ok so when you are going down the highway the best gear to keep it in to get the best performance top end is OD. right?

Yeah, everything Cale said. Now, to add a little fuel to the fire. :D If you're going 40 mph or less, you can shift it to 2. Just remember to take it back up to 3 or D (It doesn't matter at this point) before you rev out 2. When I'm at a red light, and I think someone might try to race me, but I want to pull off easy, I put my shift in 2, and then on up to 3, once the race starts and I'm at WOT. Our autos act real funny in between gears on normal takeoffs sometimes. Hard to explain, but have you ever floored the car, and it goes nowhere? That's because you're in a higher (numerically lower) gear. You can lose a race on the roll, easy! My two cents.

yea my auto is messed up. It'll granny shift the 2-3 shift ALL THE TIME, unless while I'm at WOT I jam the shifter from OD to D and then back to OD. Anyone care to explain. If I don't it's exactly like granny shifting a manual...I don't think in a race you'd want this happening.
