  • H E L P !!!!

Ok people -- so heres the story:

about 6 months ago i changed my clutch for one i bought from autozone, and drained the tranny fluid out and put in synthetic fluid all bought from autozone (mobil 1 synth. ATF fluid - Dexron III)

anyway, I then went and took the car for a drive and found i couldnt shift while the engine was running. i would push the pedal in, but the car wouldnt shift out of gear. i couldnt understand it at all.

well after taking the whole thing apart and replacing the throwout bearing and putting it back together and still having the same problem, i managed to get it to shift up to third. -- i drove it home and worked on it there fiddling with stuff..eventually got it to shift hard if i forced it. after a week it went away, and i could shift normally.

well -- around two/three weeks ago someone pissed me off and i thot i would give them a "free rubber coating" for their hood. took the car to 5500, dropped the gas and let off the clutch only to hear the engine rev, feel the tires NOT MOVE and smell the worst smell in the world -- burning clutch. i knew at that point my clutch was fragged so i went to get another one. was going to get a replacement from Autozone, only to forget to order it and have to get one from NAPA instead (maybe this would solve the problem?) -- got that clutch put on and everything, and now im experiencing the same problem as before. car will not shift while engine is running. WTF!

i need some help here people. to date i hvae replaced : clutch / ATF fluid from synth -> regular (on the off chance that was what caused it) / whole hydraulic system (in case it was worn out).

need some suggestions cause this is costing me money i dont have. any ideas?

    thanks.

Did you bleed your slave cylinder?
If not there is your problem.

Russ, I'm assuming from what I've read that it will shift when the car is not running, correct? If this is the case, then you can probably figure that the transmission itself is not at fault. I would check out the slave cylinder & make sure it is not the cause of your problems.

Definately make sure you bleed the slave cylinder. Sounds like you got air in there and when you press the clutch in it's not pushing the throw out bearing in far enough (because of the air in the slave/hydraulic line).

the slave -- yea well, that would be the case, except for i bought a brand new one from GM yesterday!

would there be air in a brand new one? (not sure) ...

            i dunno... im really frustrated.

Yes, air would be in the brand new one. After you get it all hooked up and the tranny back on, you need to have someone pump the clutch a few times then hold it down while you quickly open and close the bleeder screw. Do that several times and you should be all set. Also make sure you check the fluid level in the resevior after every couple turns.
