I know this may sound dumb but the only thing I can think of is you don't have Second Gear Start(SGS) on or possibly there is a problem with the SGS itself?

Actually, 3.4L don't have a button for second gear start, but it does seem to be in the PCM. I discovered this when trying to find the performance shift mode that the V8's had. It was an option on V8 Pontiacs, but not on the Chevy V8. Since the PCM's were the same, you could make your own switch to activate the performance shifting for the Chevy.

Well, I tried doing this on my 3.4L and it is actually the SGS. There is a harness in the passenger kick panel. You ground the correct lead with a momentary switch and whalla! SGS!! I was disappointed because I was hoping for the performance shifting, but atleast I learned something from the project.

These are the instructions I followed for the project.SGS for 3.4L
