• My rear end (on the car not me)

I have a 95 3.4 with a single wheel drive rear end (drum brakes).
a) What would be involved if I swap (my hubby would do the work) a posi-traction rear end from a TransAm or Z28 with "disk brakes" (brake line changes etc)??? Is it a direct boltup swap (springs, shock mount locations etc) or any modifications?
b) How much should we expect to pay for a salvaged unit at the bone yard?
c) what years would fit our 95?

Please help,
Tanya

The rear swap is pretty much bolt in. All the mounting points are the same. There is a slight difference in wheel hub diameter for 98+ but I don't believe that is a major issue. The rear must be from a non-traction control vehicle. The speed sensor and brake line configuration are not the same on TCS and non-TCS cars. You will also need new parking brake cables. I believe most of hte online salvage yards are around $250-300. One other thing to consider is gears. Many elect to go for 3.42:1 upgrade. Stock, your 3.4L has a 3.23:1. You should be able to find rears with either.

yep I did it.

Any rear off a 93-97 trans am or z28 will fit. 98+ rears will fit technically, but the rear brakes are different. if you ever do pads you will have to specify that the rear is off a 98+, instead of jsut saying you are a 93-97 f-body with 4 wheel disc brakes. Not only that it may make oyur cr bake differently, since 98+ brakes are bigger in the front I asssume they are bigger in the rear and may give you braking problems.

While you are doing this you may consider a Lt1 driveshaft, makes taking off the rear axle easier if the stock driveshaft comes off with the rear, or at least it did for me. It lighter and will help more, and they are cheap I got mone for $25. Aluminum ones off of Ls1 cars are lighter but are $150+.

Everything hooked up jsut fine, you need to use the "hard" brake lines on the rear axle it self, but most rear axles come with it.

Every thing works on my car and i have been driving/draggin/autoXing with it for almost a year. Even the Low Traction light works when I lose traction.

I went form 3.23s to 3.42s and noticed a little difference but my speedo and odomoeter are off a little bit.

any specific q's I will anwser.

I still have not replaced my e-brake cable but it looks easy, I am jsut lazy and do fine without it.

I did the thing myself, but I am pretty big, and was ingenious about using my jacks, and jack stands to do the lifting for me. My rear+driveshaft was listed as 275 lbs. cost me $408 icluding shipping, but I had to clean and regrease my calipers, and I got new rotors to be safe but the pads looked fine. I got new rotors for $53 shipped to me through JCwhitney.

BTW I have a 94 3.4L and put on a rear axle off a 97 WS6 Trans Am.
