i have a 98 firebird v6 and wanna change the stock 3.08 gears to 3.42.. what all do i need ??? I got a friend mechanic to do it for cheap.. What all do i need in order for it to work?

a new differential... 3.42 ring is substantially thicker than the 3.08. -
I did the same swap with my bird. Actually I just purchased a complete rear axle from a junkyard that has the LSD already in it. I found it was cheeper and easier than swapping just the gears and dif.
If you are just swapping gears and diff, you need a new 3 series carrier, pinion shims, carrier shims, crush sleeve, pinion seal, pinion nut, ring gear bolts, cover gasket, pinion bearings, and carrier bearings and of course gears.
