You're making this more complicated then it needs to be. Look in my sig to how I did it. Some points for you.

1. Pinion depth is the same for all our 10 bolt rear ends. Hence no pinion depth tool is needed. Just reuse the pinion shim from the old set.

2. Yes you can do trial and error if for example you didn't have the old shim. You can put a same size bearing on there just a larger internal diameter. Once you get it right, put the right size bearing on the pinion.

3. You must have a lift or the axle out of the car if you want to use a breaker bar. It's not going to fit. I had to use an impact. That's by far the best way to go. That pinion nut must be installed with precision. Very slowly.

4. You don't need a torque wrench. I just stopped tightening when there was lack of fore aft motion. No a milimeter more. Got there very slow. Yes a torque wrench might have helped, but very hard to find that small of a size. 10-20inch lbs depending on the condition of the bearing.

What do you need a feeler gauge and micrometer for? Never used them during gear changes.

don't complicate things
I installed mine like the rest of these guys, on the parking lot of my apartment. Removed the old one, put the LSD in, tq'd it down, and did some donuts. only special tool I used was a Tq wrench.
no whines.

BTW if you use a Zexel torsen lsd, you DON'T need LSD additive.

I was just responding to DrFix2Fly's post. You don't need to touch the pinion. If you already have a 3 series carrier and are just replacing it with a Torsen then it's easy.

Correct me if I'm wrong here, but the bearings are the little round things on both sides? In the picture on SLP's site, since it only shows one side, its the thing on the end?

I took a picture of my differential I just got from SLP, but I don't have a place to host it.

Ok ok, so the link that I posted for the install guide seems eerily simplistic. Could someone check them out, and let me know if there are any major steps missing (shims, etc)? I'll be getting the Zexel within the month or so, and am going to attempt the install w/ my brother. But if it's going to be a PITA, I think I'd just assume take it to a shop. Thanks for the insight guys.

I'm not sure who will read this - but it concerns the additive.

#1 - the additive is supposed to only be for the non gear type limited slip differentials, however it will not harm the torsen.

#2 - GM got a 1999-02 recall on all the V8s with torsens for making a "clicking" noise when turning. The fix for this was this additive.

#3 - The additive is simply a friction modifier, it actually lubricates the gears if they happen to touch under hard load and keeps them from scraping.

I am currently running this additive, I have no problems with my torsen. I put in the additive because GM wouldn't lifetime warrant my new differential without it (they installed it so they warrant it - cool huh?). It cost me an extra $10 but hell, works just as fine with it as it does without it .
