  • Found: z/28 rear end -axle.

Got a line on a 3.42/lsd rear end for $200, but it's missing an axle. So, question is, can I just put one out of my 3.08/open v6 rear end on it without messing up anything inside and having to pay $400 to get it fixed up?

Unless you can do the work yourself, I would wait to get one that does not require Axle work. Someone else can chime in on what it would take to replace the axle I have not worked on them.

Yes, you can install the axle from the 3:08's to the 3:42's. They are completely compatible.

You should be able to swap the axle's no problem. I had to pull the axle's with my rearend when I swapped rears. When you are pulling out the axle's make sure to keep a finger on the C-clip, you don't want to drop it because it will be a pain to find again unless you drain all of the fluid first.

oh, i think this one will not have a c-clip or anything, it might, but it's been at a junk yard for 6 months. I think i'll just spray engine degreaser in it, rinse it out, rinse again, install axle, and then fill with fluid and seal 'er up.

You have to pull the axles out a bit to swap gears anyway, so it's not much extra work to replace an axle.

if its missing an axle and been sitting in a junk yard, I think I would be worried..... are all the seals shot being exposed like that? although im in a totally different climate than you.

otherwise, swapping an axle should be a bad job at all. actually, had the axles out of my neighbors truck the earlier in the week.

Well, I suppose it's been inside, but when it lost the axle I would bet it got drained.

The climate down here in Houston is just right for rust. I would not do it Unless your absolutely positive the axle is the only thing you have to replace... Do you know the history on the axle? Was it ever on a track? reason why I ask is cause I bought a rear for 250. Got rotors and pads 150ish. Did the whole change out and drove it for 2 weeks. Then I ended up putting 500 into it for an overhaule. Crush sleave, seals, bearings ect..... Just be carfule if it's missing an axle I would really ask questions.

yeah, i'm starting to wonder what gears it has and everything. Surely they'd take care of it... but don't worry, i'm not in a hury so i am not gonna rush into something that i don't need

What yr is it out of? If it is 98+ it'll be a direct swap(assuming you have 98 via your username). 93-97 and you'll run into some differences(axle length, brake mounts, and parking brake).
