  • A really n00b question

just bought an '02 v6 camaro auto, all stock and 47000 miles. I know this is going to sound screwy, but I gotta ask.

Transmission feels like it is shifting fine. Everything feels tight and shifts are firm but not harsh. I can feel it wind and shift, 1st to 2od then 2od to 3rd, then 3rd to OD, but it stops there. Shouldn't there be the final lockup stage? After reading and searching, I think this thing should be acting like a 5 speed auto and not a 4 speed auto, or am I just all twisted in my thinking..?

if it makes any diff. I just put toyo proxes 4's on it. 245/50/16's. Looks like it turns about 1800 rpm @ 65
    1950 rpm @ 70
    2100 rpm @ 75

      1st gear
      2nd gear
      3rd gear
      4th(Overdrive) gear

      A4 transmission

If that doesn't answer your question my bad I have no clue wth your actually asking.

4th gear is overdrive there is not a "5th gear" for overdrive,

I think what Eddie is talking about is the coverter locking up, which is your overdrive... 4th gear isn't Overdrive...

You should feel 5 different "gears". There are 4 gears plus the coverter locking up...

When you have it in overdrive, and it shifts into 4th gear, you can tell if the TCC is engaging by looking real close at the tach a couple of seconds after the 4th gear shift. You'll see it drop by just a little bit, maybe a couple hundred RPM. You probably won't see this occur under hard acceleration, you have to accelerate normally, and then when your speed levels off around 30mph or so, then you look for that little drop in the RPM's

The convertor will lock in 3rd as well.

Thanks for explaining this for me...it is exactly what I was trying to say.. It is that final lockup that I don't think is happening. I have an 01 Z71 auto and I can feel the lockup watch the tach drop a few hundred rpm's...that is what I am not feeling in the Camaro...
