I have a set of GM Motive 3.73s and I was wondering how I can find out what the proper pinion depth should be. Thanks.

well I have never done gears before but i learned how in school. you have to look at the shim thikness that was in there before as a starting point. add some shims put it all together and turn the gears see where the touch(with paint)you want the wear pattern in the middle i beleive. then add or subtract shims as needed. some gears will tell you on them the shim thickness to add. this is how I learned it and why I am just going to pay someone to do it. good luck. where in AZ are you?

The marking on the gears is for the rear end they were in...pinions are easy to reproduce perfectly...but rear end housings are not...shims make up for the differences in the rear end housing not the differences in pinions.98 Bright Red Camaro
Too many mods to list....check my website

I put in the pinion with the stock shims. It seems to contact ok, but I need to know what pinion depth they should be at. My brother bought some 4.10s brand new and they had the Pinion depth on them. I get a little whine under light accel in 3rd gear and up. Not on the decel. I think it may just be a backlash issue, as the backlash was ok, just on the tighter side of things. I though I would check and see if maybe I could find out what pinion depth a set of motive 3.73s should be put at. Oh well. Thanks anyhow.1997 Chevrolet Camaro v6 - 13.8@104MPH
