3.73's will suck your gas considerably more than 3.08's or 3.42's but as long as you dont do a lot of highway driving you should be fine. Your off the line acceleration will be increased a lot but you will lose high end.

I don't know if I would do it on a 3.4 engine. You guys seems to be lacking top end.

        I wouldn't put 3.73s on a 3.8 engine nevermind a 3.4. I'm saving up to get 3.42s and a shiftkit. That should be cool.

Yes, you are right 3.73s would be overkill on a V6. 3.42s are probably optimal.

Heres my problem with that. If I have a m5, then I have 3.23s right. If I go 3.42s, am I gaining that much? I don't care about mileage at all, just the quarter mile. Does anyone think, strictly performance wise, that 3.73s would be worse than 3.42s?

              For a M5 go with 3.73, for a A4 go with 3.42.

I'm probably definatley not accurate. But my theory would the the 3.42s would be better performance wise. The 3.73s will push you really fast in the 1/4 but that high speed you want isn't going to be there. Plus it kills your gas mileage. 3.42s would be better. It's like the best of both worlds.

I prefer 3.42s... anything higher is worthless (sorry magnus)

3.73 is definately better in the 1/4 mile. You do not need that much top end in the 1/4, its all about the 60'. If you are just looking for 1/4 mile times get 3.73. Anyone that says that 3.42 are better for the 1/4 has not tried 3.73. 4.10 is overkill not 3.73

thanks for all the replies....i do a lot of highway driving, but i should be getting a "work car" soon and since my bird already has 3.23's in it, i dont feel that 3.42's will be worth the money in performance...pretty much i want a big jump outta the hole. im not looking to hit 130 on my speedo, just to grab a** outta the hole. let me know now if this is still a bad idea to go with the 3.73's??? thanx again!

man i have 3.73s in my 3.4. all i can say is it is great. make sure you have a great intake and headers and exhaust to make it worth while. 3.73s launch hard and your car will have all the balls it needs. top speeds are at 104mph but if you reconfigure your stuff, you can go faster. get the scu2000.. if u have an auto... if not.. go to www.camaroelectronics.com and order you a speedo recalibrator. they are 106 shipped to your door. My performance was increased and my highway miles are not bad. if you want performance you will be willing to pay for a bit more gas.

3.73's are not overkill on a V6 as long as you don't do much highway stuff.. cruising at 3000 RPM isn't much fun.

I have 3.73's and now wish I had gone with 4.10's.. I will eventually.
