• 3.73 or 4.10?

2002 m5, stock 3.23 w/lsd in there right now. i haven't dynoed since my cam & other mods, but i'll be aiming for 215-230 rwhp when i do dyno in the spring.

so which gears should i go with? i want to hit the 1/4 as close to redline as possible, but keep my stock rpm limiter. this is for purely n/a application.

    thoughts?

3.73 for a daily driver. I have heard some complaints that 4.10 is a little too steep. BUT if you are willing to sacrifice around town and everyday drivability, go for 4.10.

With the 30% overdrive in our cars the 4.10 are not even that bad for daily drivers. Just not good for highway driving. you can do 150 at 5570rpms.

i just don't want to end up having to shift into 4th 200 feet before the line...that would suck

Yeah, I was around 5000rpm in 3rd with stock 3:23's at the line. 3:42's would probably be red line and anything higher you're into 4th gear.

Tim LeGros said he didn't get any better times from 3:73's than he did with 3:42's.

I would think that the gain from going 3:73's over 3:42's is lost due to the extra shift required.

With my little 3.4 I shift out of 3rd at about 112 on my speedo (not correct yet) which is about 94mph... You'll be in some trouble I think with 4.10s.

Nor did I with my 3.73's or James with his 4.10's. James went back to 3.23, I went back to 3.42.

With 3.73 or 4.10 in a manual you hit fourth gear a long ways before you hit the end of the track... and regardless of what's in the back, fourth gear in a manual (or third in an auto) is a DOG.

Look at the timeslips page. The fastest cars all have 3.42's. There's one with 3.73 but I think he could go even faster if he went down to a 3.42 or 3.23.

High gears are not for everyone...

Stefan was your top end better with 3.42s or 3.73s? My car pulls 3rd gear hard now... it used to hit a damn brick wall when it shifted to 3rd at 70mph but now it just keeps pulling all the way through 3rd like any other gear.

Third was fine... but with 3.73's you fly right through third and then you're suddenly in fourth, where it's a dog.

On the highway I couldn't even downshift into third with 3.73's because it would almost redline. With the 3.23's or 3.42's third is a powerhouse at highway speeds, with 3.73's third is almost unuseable.
