  • M5 swap to Auto

I am considering a 3.8l swap. I can get the complete motor for pretty cheap with an auto tranny. What do i need to convert the manual m5 to the auto 4l60e tranny? Can it even be done? Thanks again

i went from an auto to a manual, and yes it can be done. Just make sure to get the wireing harness with the 3.8 and you will need to ask for the interior parts, aka the shifter, the console piece, and asscoiated items. Just tell them, the place you are buying it from, and they will know. Also, they will send you a new brake pedal assembly, that will replace your clutch and brake.

Camaro Zack- Didn't you need to cut a hole above the trans for the shifter? Would this cause a problem when trying to mount the automatic shifter? Did you have to remove any of the mounting holes for the auto shifter? I ask because a stock M5 may not have metal in places for mounting.

Camaro Zach, i too worry about the hole you had to cut out. Is there anything i will be missing as far bolt holes go or anything like that? Thanks

Why not just keep the stick? It sure would be a lot easier, and cheaper. You could just sell the auto if the combo is really that good of a deal. The engine should bolt right up, but you might need to get the pcm redone so its setup for a manual.

yes i did have to cut a hole, if you are goin from manual to auto, simply weld some sheet metal to the floor board, wether inside the car or on the outside. There will be no problem, its just to keep water out.

The hole you cut didn't remove any mounting brackets/holes for the auto shifter and its components?

how far am i going to take it....faaar

So i don't NEED to weld anything, ie i won't be missing any brackets that i have to have. I will make a boot or something to keep out the water. Just a little worried about brackets and such. Thanks for help

ya, you wont need any brackets to my knowledge, and if so, its not like it will be a big deal, just make some brackets, its nothing force bearing, if anything its just the auto shifter, so its not like you have HP running through it, as you do in the manual.
