• Question: hard shifts, jumpy rpm's, and oil! Please help

Okay this started off a while ago but i will describe it as best I can.

The first thing I noticed was when I would stay at a constant speed. As soon as the transmission downshifted (I guess for gas mileage) the rpm's would begin to dip between 1.8 and 2k steadily. It will continue to do this till I step on the gas and get it to shift. It begins again as soon as the rpm range normalizes and the tranny downshifts.

This went on for a while, started to notice it at idle when the car was cold as well, but as far as I know a little bit of rpm dip is normal for a cold engine.

The next problem I noticed was rough shifting when I was getting on it. Usually in the 2-3 or 3-4 shifts. 2-3 sticks like its a manual, jerking the car sometimes, and 3-4 would be almost like a slip, it would feel smooth but sound just a little odd. Almost as if it was shifting too fast.

The last thing I noticed was three days ago. After I raced around for a little bit I parked the car and noticed a faint burning smell along the side of the car. I couldnt tell if it was oil or transmission fluid but there was definitely a smell. Could have been some old oil that was chillen on the engine, you never know.

    -------------------------------------------------

On another note I have noticed decreased gas mileage and a lack of oil, I fill it up and a month or so will go by sometimes longer when the oil light will come on. I catch it now because I am watching the car like a hawk but could these all be related and if so what are we looking at. Sounds like its time for a new car but before I part her out and catch a loss of $$ tell me what you think could be the culprit

For those that might care to know, all problems were solved with a quart and a half of transmission fluid
