  • 5spd vs. 6spd

    http://www.new-cars.com/2002/chevrol...l#transmission

The ratios on the 5 spd are taller for 1st - 3rd gears.
Doesn't this pretty much mean that a 5 spd with similar engine performance to a v8 (power adder obviously) will pull harder in every gear than it's v8 counterpart and make it the better race machine.
Assuming both cars have the same final drive ratio

yep but the T5 will break, because its a weak wussy tranny.

I woudl take the T56 in a hearbeat and just put in a taller final drive, and have a tranny that will pull harder and get better gas mileage do to the nice 6th gear overdrive.

Also I think the early versions of f-body T-56s had very similar gearing to a T5.

ME8251, you should know (of all people) that you can build a T-5 to handle big power. But in terms of having your cake and eating it too, the T56 is much more suitable giving better results for your dollar.

Depends on a lot of things, especially the rear end gears.

Gear the rear end so the car can properly pull the tall first gear off the line and the closer ratios of the 6 speed will rule. Especially if the car is modified and has a narrower torque curve than stock.
