  • Manual Trans Strength?

I just checked tremec's website, it says the stock T-5 can take somewhere between 225-230lbft of torque max!!! I know I can make more torque than that, is this right? I don't want to kill my trans :(

Does anyone know how long these things last?

    Tremec?

    Isn't the M5 a Borg-Warner?

I do believe the T5 in our cars is made by Borg Warner. I think the Tremec T5's are used in the Mustangs, but I could be wrong.

What is said above. I am not sure on the power ratings though.

I get thrown out of reverse as soon as I engage the clutch, and 2nd gear getslike that once in a awhile when i am downshifting. I think its time for an replacement.

Tremec owns Borg-Warner. Our transmissions are made by Tremec under the name "Borg-Warner T5". Exact same transmission, built in the same factory (in Mexico, I might add), as the "Tremec T5". Rating is 300 ft-lbs, gives you 75 ft-lbs of breathing room by the books. If anything, the clutch is the weak link. Centerforce offers a Dual Friction model and Ram offers FIVE different clutches for the 3.8 T-5.

My T-5 has held out no problem so far, Mike Huff would be another high-power T-5 owner worth asking. But my car isn't exactly a torque monster, it's more top-end hp, which isn't as stressful as major low-end grunt (read: nitrous).

If you want a strong manual, go for the Tremec TR-3550 TKO 5-speed. Rated to 500 ft-lbs, can easily handle 700... makes the T-56 look like it's made out of jello in comparison.

              www.ttcautomotive.com/products/tremec/tr-3550.htm

Though that page doesn't actually describe the TKO. The TKO is a beefed-up version of the 3550.

              www.salleechevrolet.com/BorgWarner/bwt56.html

For info on the T-56 (and proof they're made by the same company... notice the name Tremec and Borg-Warner on the same page...).

              www.ttcautomotive.com/products/tremec/5speeds.htm

General stats about all Tremec 5-speed models.

To my knowledge, a Tremec TKO has never been installed in a V6 F-Body but it is easily possible with a good transmission shop. If/when I blow my tranny either a T-56 or a TKO is going in there.

Stefan, where can I get some price info on the TKO?? I had to pull my tranny this weekend, and it's at the shop right now. I may end up needing another tranny all together.
