Another POS converter

Ok, gotta vent bigtime. I get the car back Sat night and go to the track Sunday. Nice day, cool out (high 50's). Try out my brand new Yank 3200 stall converter. First run sucked. 12.7@104mph. I was like WTF :mad: Second run, 12.9@101 mph. Ok, now I'm beyond Pissed off.. so I try without the nitrous and net a whopping 14.5@90mph. Utterly f*cking embarrassed, I leave the track. Another sh*t converter in my car.. I call them and of course they DON'T RETURN MY CALL.. real nice. So, I call them again and they answer. Basically, the guy wants to change the stall again. I noticed the stall was actually 2800!!! Do these people know what the hell they're doing??? My stock converter has been the most efficient converter so far. My best runs WERE 12.6's @ 109/110 with a misfire!!!! Now, my car runs great (not rich anymore) and goes SLOWER WITH A BRAND NEW "performance" converter. Sorry for the rant, what the hell would you guys do??? Should I send it back again or ask for a refund. (Of course, the word refund never came out of the guy's mouth on the phone today).

Couple things here Shirl....

First, Yank is well known for their LACK of customer service.. They suck.. They are also known for not making great V6 verters. I have yet to see someone lay down "impressive" numbers with one of their verters.

Your stock converter is going to be the most effecient no matter what.

You went 14.5@90 with just the blower?

This is what you need to post Shirl.. You need to post your 60' 18/th ET@MPH and 1/4 ET@MPH from before and after the verter.

Also, how are you launching now? Are you launching from low rpm's and flashing the converter like you shoud be or brake torquing it and not taking full advantage of it?

I would defiantely send it back. Id go with a PI #7 pump.. should flash around 3200 on your application with the blower.

I've said this time and time again, picking a converter is hit or miss.. if you go with something new, it's a gamble.

Some people do great things with PI, some don't.. but most do... as for Yank and Edge, it's 50/50.

Sorry for these real basic questions, but how were you launching? Did you stall up to the rated stall then punch it? Did you flash from idle? If you sorta rolled into WOT, what RPM did you start from? If you flashed from somewhere other than Idle, what rpm was it? How was traction?

Sorry about the questions again, but I don't think it's the converter. Mine gave sucky results the last time I was at the track. I haven't been back yet, but after reading up a bit, and actually understanding how a converter works, I know that I was launching all wrong. This seems to be real common at the beginning with any converter. We have to learn to "walk" all over again.

I have no doubt that I'll do better next time, so will you.

I launched at 2200. The 60fts were 1.9's/1.8's. Nothing was improved upon at all and looking at the timeslip, I see that my top end suffered bigtime. My timeslips were almost exactly the same as before the converter was installed until about the 330'. I went through the traps at 5500rpm which is too high. Even if I didn't launch correctly, how can anyone justify a loss of .5 and 6-10mph?? And to get me even more pissed off, I get home, open an envelope on my kitchen table and it's the return receipt from Coan. THEY F*CKING CHARGED ME A RESTOCKING FEE WHEN THEY BUILT/SENT THE WRONG CONVERTER TO ME!!!!! These companies suck and they screw people in the worse way. If Coan doesn't take this restocking fee off, I'm gonna splatter their name all over the place on here. Oh, and btw, thanks for listening.. [img]graemlins/crybaby.gif[/img]

Sorry to hear about the misfortune. You can always look into the edge converters.

Shirl, post your timeslips from launching at 1200 vs your timeslips launching at 2200.. 2200 is way to high IMHO.. Also, were you dead hooking? I bet you don't have enough tire.

Why do you say 5500 is too high? You should be trapping at 6K or so ideally... the very top of third.

Launch affects your entire 1/4.. If you have a bad launch, especially with a verter yoru ET and MPH will be off.

There has to be something wrong with the car OTHER than the verter if your losing 10mph!! like fueling maybe.

Shirl, please post your entire slips from before and after.. and post your luanch techniques for each slip as well.

Also, check things like timing, O2's, KR, tranny fluid...

are you hitting the limiter on shifts?

If you are at a dead stop on the street and just hit the gas... just punch it, what happens? Do you loose traction much easier than you did before the converteR?

from experiencing the same thing happen with nachius' converter, i would say it isn't locking up at high speeds, ,resulting in loss of power and crappy times/mph's

i dont know if that can be fixed or not. jsut throwing that out there.

I say send it back and get a PI one. I ordered one a while back and they original built me a v8 one. My tranny was in the air and the shop calls me to say the bad news. I call PI and Vicki(I think that's her name)completely takes care of everything. They built a new one and had it shipped to me in two days. Great customer service is very important imo. GET A REFUND!

Keith, conditions, traction, and the car itself were all about perfect. I don't use the car everyday. It has 21,xxx miles on it. The last time I raced it was in the fall before I put it away for the winter. I always launch at about 2000+ to spool up the blower. My traction was excellent. I am going to have the stock converter re-installed and go to the track again within the next 2 weeks to see the difference. I will post timeslips later. As for Coan, they have a lot of nerve trying to charge ME for re-stocking and shipping when they sent me the WRONG CONVERTER in the first place. This is not only aggravating, it is EXTREMELY COSTLY. If both of these companies don't make ammends, they may be seeing me in the NJ courts.

Shirl, don't re-install the stock converter just yet!!

Please answer many of my questions..

How fast does the SC spool up?

What happens when you just mash the gas from a stop on the street? Do you loose traction faster than you did with the stock converter?

How did you do launching at 1200 as oppposed to 2200.

Are you hitting the limiter on shifts?

Do you have enough tranny fluid?

Are you getting any KR? How about enough fuel?

Can you please post complete before and after slips.

Is the car DEAD hooking? What tires you on?

With my car NA and my converter, Nitto's only dead hooked 50% of the time on a GREAT track. I would imagine adding a blower would just cause me to spin. That's on 15" wheels too.

I agree with Magnus. Don't take it out yet. I still think your converter is fine. I think that Magnus can help you if you answer his questions.

Excellent way of putting it man.. Shirl, your car is a whole new beast now.. you need to completely relearn what it likes now.

It may be that the converter is no good.. I've seen some pretty crapy yank verters in V6's first hand before.. it's hit or mis. But it also may be that you just have ANOTHER issue, or haven't figured out how to launch right just yet.
