I was wondering if anyone with a 98 V6 Manual has a problem when shifting fast from 1st to 2nd gear. Whenever I shift extremely fast, it grinds terribly, but not in any other gears. I have even held the clutch all the way in and just shifted multiple times and it makes this noise whevenever the shift is fast enough. I am wondering if the synchro is off. If you have any info, I would appreciate it.

Clutch dogs! AKA synchro's.
My reverse synchro could use a little work, but I'm not too worried about it going out before a rebuild is planned.<b>15.41</b> @ 89.80 & 15.45 @ <b>91.64</b>, 2.21 60ft, 3,440 raceweight, using <b>OEM</b> Equipment. <br />\'98 L67/M49 w/ 134,000 miles before spun bearing. \"<i>It\'s all stock, Baby</i>!\"

There is no Synchro on reverse as far as I know.
I have the same problem, on 1-2 shift, and on 4-5 shift.
1-2 isn't too bad 99% of the time. 4-5 is often bad, so I double clutch that one.1997 Cayenne Red Metallic Camaro<br />3.8 V6 M5<br />SLP Cold Air Intake<br />Ceramic Coated Pacesetter Headers <br />Flowmaster American Thunder Catback<br />Full 3.42 & Disc Break Rear End Swap

I do the same thing, but 4th to Reverse...never a problem

Yeah I do 5th to R, it works great. Its now habit
My 1-2 shift is notchy, but it goes. Then again I'm running a Ripper shifter, which made shifting easier yet notchier at the same time (weird eh?)
You might just like a better shifter, it helped my transmission out a lot.2002 5-spd NBM Camaro

My gears used to grind when shifting quickly from 1st to 2nd (didn't grind when shifting slowly). I replaced the synchros and the problem went away!
You probably need to replace your synchros.97 Silver Camaro M5<br />Y87 Package<br />K&N FIPK<br />Flowmaster 80 Series<br />Mille Miglia MM11-2 18x9 wheels<br />Kumho ECSTA 275/35ZR 18s<br />Centerforce Dual Friction<br />B&M Ripper Shifter<br />1LE Aluminum DS<br />BMR LCA\'S<br />SLP 1.8 Rockers<br />ZZP UD WP Pulley<br />H&R Sport Springs<br />Spohn Adj PHR<br />160* Thermostat

I used to have the same problem with 1-2 shift...Then I learned how to shift it, seriously. I could drive no problem on the street, but at the rtack, I'd get a little too anxious and wanna slam it so hard into 2nd, it would miss and grind. Slow down just a little, leave the clutch in for a split second more and you'll be fine. If your syncro was out, it would grind into 2nd ALL THE TIME, not just when racing. Also, get an aftermarket shifter, I got B&M's Ripper, it is great!<a href=\"http://www.fullthrottlev6.com\" target=\"_blank\">www.fullthrottlev6.com</a> THE SOURCE!

Uhggg!
I hate it when that happens!
Mine did that the first time I tried to get a little "agressive". I'm talkin' brand new car, like 1000 miles. I've tried a couple of times since then, and got the same thing, so I figure the M5 just can't handle it. I just don't drive it as hard as I'd like to, and it works fine.

That's great advise! I picked that one up here a while back, and it's now habit. My first 6 months with the car, I would grit my teeth and grind it into reverse every morning! Arrgh!2002 CAMARO \"RS\"<br /> 3800/M5/Y87

Incorrect, alot of us can do it just fine. On a brand new car, I promise it's not the tranny's fault, it's gonna be the driver's 98% of the time. Practice shifting at very low speeds before you hit the rtack, yuo can slam them into gears and even hit the gas, and sicne you're at low low speeds, you don't even have to go 60ish to need to shift and rag on your engine.<a href=\"http://www.fullthrottlev6.com\" target=\"_blank\">www.fullthrottlev6.com</a> THE SOURCE!

My car had 24,000 miles on it when this problem started. Don't get me wrong, I have had this car over a year now, so I know how to shift. The wierd thing is, is if I press in the clutch all the way, and just slam it back and forth between 1st and 2nd, whenever I do if fast enough, it grinds.<a href=\"http://home.comcast.net/~smpuskas/\" target=\"_blank\">http://home.comcast.net/~smpuskas/</a><br /><br />3A C-Fiber Pedals<br />Free Ram Air Mod + K&N<br />RK Sport Air Temp. Yeah. After messing around some, if I leave the clutch in a bit longer, 9 times outa 10, the notchy shift for 1-2 goes away. Though my Synchros are going on 4-5 I'm pretty sure1997 Cayenne Red Metallic Camaro<br />3.8 V6 M5<br />SLP Cold Air Intake<br />Ceramic Coated Pacesetter Headers <br />Flowmaster American Thunder Catback<br />Full 3.42 & Disc Break Rear End Swap

I had this problem (the 1-2 shift problem), but then it started happening when I shifted slowly, and then eventually got so bad that I couldnt use 2nd at all. It turned out that all my hard shifts at the track bent the shift forks.
This means, that even with the clutch all the way in, shifting hard can still damage your tranny.
Well, 1800 dollars later, tranny works. But, the warranty covered it, so who cares?
