  • limited slip diffrential cheap way of doing it....

I was talking to this one mechanic and i was asking him how much wouyld he charge in labor to put in a new rear axle with the y87.

He then says that he knows a way that you weld something in the axle so that both tires will spin in a burn out, but eventually the axle messes up.

Any one ever does this? or was the guy just B/S?

yeah you can weld something in the axle. hot rodders used to do it all the time. but it gives you true posi. there is no slip what so ever. for example if you roll to a stop light and turn right the left wheel has further to travel than the right the right tire will break loose and bawl because it has to turn the same amount of rotations as the left wheel.

Forget about it ... for the $100 cost of the LSD you should skip anything hot-rod that will screw up your rear.

It turns it into a welded makeshift spool. It essentially ruins the differential. Do not do this or I will personally hit you with a large object.

I seen a car with one of these make shift posi- rearends. He ended up twisting the rearend off the line and breaking out. Did more damage then just rearend. I would pay the $100 for LSD, its safe. I wish I still had this kids email address, I am sure he would say go LSD. His car still doesn't run good a year later.

a shop said that they could do this for me aswell as a custom job (small shop here in town). My friend has this done to his Nova, but I think a better choice would just be to do an axle swap to a y87 rear or have a series 3 carrier installed with gears and posi if you currently have 3.08s.

There is no real reason to have it unless you're doing only drag driving because of the safety concerns that you would have under normal everday driving (both for yourself and other drivers on the road).

yeah, theres no reason to do that unless you're a poor redneck, it makes it so both rear tires spin at the same speed around turns, which is a VERY dangerous thing to be doing.
