The torsen doesn't actually cost so much less... retail cost for the torsen OEM unit from GM is $822.83.
GM PART # 12363985
CATEGORY: All
PACK QTY: 1 CORE CHARGE: $0.00
GM LIST: $822.83
OUR PRICE: $575.98
DESCRIPTION: DIFF Z-T
The thing is, its dirt cheap from SLP because they're selling it as a take-off unit. Even wholesale on it is still $575!
The Torsen unit doesn't use clutches, it uses a worm gear drive system. The Eaton uses a flat disc clutching system, while the auburn uses a cone shaped clutching system (more surface area). The T2-R is a worm gear torsen with clutch packs to help it bind even more, and its sold by sam strano for roadracing

Great summary Dominic, thanks!! Been searching for something like that. Opinions are great and welcome, but sometimes simple reading works wonders

So since the Torsen "take-off" is only 99$ should I go ahead and buy it? Also will it bolt directly onto my M5?

Dominic, if I'm understanding correctly what your guide says, I'm gonna need to get a new differential or get it rebuilt after 40,000 miles??? Damn, that is not worth the money I paid for that differential!!!
EDIT: Oh, I just remembered, Auburns CAN'T be rebuilt!
