• is switching gear size a common thing to do in other cars?

is it common for other cars besides camaro/firebirds etc. to upgrade to a higher gear size? ex: 3.08 to 3.42
my friend thought i was dumb for getting new gears and he didnt know why i was. he said i wouldnt get any performance increase. i just told him he was stupid and i would race him when i get the gears installed. he has a '90 chevy truck w/ a 350 and i already beat him once by a car length.

I went to 3.73 gears and that was like adding hp w/o actually doing it. It's the first time I've done something to the car that made it faster without adding hp.

Oh, and to answer your question, yes it is common. Especially for domestic cars: fbody, vette, mustang, and all muscle cars and hot rods. :D

I put 4.56 gears in my Jeep! Of course, with 5" of lift and 32x12.50 Swampers, i needed those gears to move :D

Trucks and muscle cars have been doing it for YEARS. It's one of the best mods to shave off some time. I think it became less popular with the front driver's and their trans-axles, but I've noticed that a few of them are now coming out with/already out with tranny's and stuff that allow them to choose their gear ratio (aftermarket).

Going from 3.08 gears to 3.42s definitely helped my car.
