4 speed automatic

This might kinda be a dumb question. Is my 4 speed automatic 3 speeds with the 4th being overdrive or is it 4 speeds with the 5th being overdrive? The reason i'm asking this is because i recently had my transmission casing replaced (he was supposed to put my original transmission back in) and now i'm counting 4 gears before overdrive, and i was under the impression that i only had 3 before overdrive.

You may be feeling the torque converter clutch engage in 3rd or 4th and be mistaking it as a shift. If that's not it, I have no clue...

Some people refer to the 4L60E as a 3-speed automatic w/overdrive, other people simply refer to it as a 4-speed automatic.

Would this cause the RPM's to drop like when it shifts?

2nd gear, shift, rpm's drop
3rd gear, rpm's drop
torque converter lock up, shift, rpm's drop
4th gear, aka overdrive

thanks, i'm just getting parnoid about my car breaking, and i guess i never noticed the torque converter lock up before.

depends on the converter you have too. in stock converters, the lock-up is really weak, and 500 rpms is about right. with my aftermarket converter, the lock-up was built so tight and efficient, that it feels more like a gear than 1, 2, 3, OR 4. 1-2 drops maybe 300 rpms under normal driving, 2-3 drops maybe 300-500 under same conditions, and lock-up drops well over 1200 rpms under normal driving. and OD drops only about 200-500 rpms as well. strange how torque converters work.

Let's not get too silly. Overdrive is just any gear that has a less than 1:1 ratio.
