    I "think"..
that there are some holes on the passenger side that hold it all together w/screws..

be carefulle when you take it off.. cause there may be some wires running inside the shaft..

I drive a manual, so if anyone wants to correct me / explane more please feel free

i believe there is a staple on the front side of the shifter. shutoff the car, put on the emergency brake, shift to 1 you should be able to see it. remove the staple (carefully!) and the shifter know should be free. this is for '98+ but i wouldnt hazard that it applies to the '97 as well.

Open the rear hatch. Tie a rope from the shift knob out the back of your car to a tree trunk or innocent bystander. Put your car in drive, and FLOOR IT! I had to do this several times because the jogger I tied the rope to kept falling down every time I gunned it, but I got the shift knob off after a while. GOOD LUCK!
