on my current car , a 92 firebird, i would like to switch from an automatic to a manual, how hard is this, what is a good ball park estimation about having it done (by mechanic, not me) and the thing i would possibly have to buy (if the mechanic says i need to buy them and is not in the labor/parts charge) i also am asking this because this summer there is a possibility of me getting a new car and all the manuals are either too far away are too expensive....advice would be useful [img]smile.gif[/img]

I attempted an auto to manual conversion about 9 years ago, but gave up because it was turning out to be a royal PITA.
Needed:
-MTrans
-Flywheel
-Clutch
-Pedal Linkage
-Linkage Cables
-Man. Trans Crossmember (I think, but didn't get that far)
-Need to tear down the whole dashboard for clutch pedal assembly.
-PCM Reprogramming for a Man. Trans
-Probaly much much more, but I gave up after I got this far.
I know that the clutch linkage was a pain to figure out. It took me 2 hours to figure out what needed to be torn out to get to everything up underneath the dash. I kinda needed my car too, so having it out of commission for a few weeks was not an option.

Really to make it easier, you'll need a computer (and wiring harness) for a manual car. Instead of trying to reprogram an automatic car.
the parts lists above was pretty accurate, and yeah the manual transmission crossmember is different.
If you decide to spread it out over a few weeks instead of just doing it in a day or two, I'd reccomend installing the pedal assembly, and have it as a dead pedal for the mean time. Run all your master and slave cylinder etc. Measure and cut the hole for the shifter, etc. That way, when you are ready to change it. You drop the A4, change flywheels, add the clutch, and pop the T5 in, and then change out the computers. Should be it. I got an auto, but at the price and condition it was in I couldn't afford to pass it up. (In-lot special)
Bought it last May - 1998 v6, power windows/mirrors, cd/am/fm, t-tops. I beat you mine has all that plus leather, no sratches, a 1999 with a little over 28k on it for only $13,500. Another reason I ended up with an auto.
