I looked everywhere for a used rear to put it and the only one i could find was one without any brake components on it for $250. My question is can i just use my drum brakes on the new rear?im only looking for one that is in driving distance.

wouldnt it be easier to just swap out the axles with the drums attached to the new rear?

If the other rear you bought doesn't have any brake hardware on it, then yes, you can swap the drums you currently have to the one you bought. The axles will have to be removed either way to install the backing plates for the brake setup.

Are you ever near the Philly area? There is a guy here that sells whole disk rear setups really cheap. You can swap out the whole rear and not worry about drum brakes...ever again.

Never been there. ive looked and called everywhere for a complete rear with brakes. The best price i got was 250 without the brakes. im willing to drive to pick it up, but i think Philly is a little to far for me.

Philly to the 'burg is only 4.5 hours TOPS. I used to make it from Ewing (45mins away from philly) to Slippery Rock (1 hour north of th 'burg) in 5.5 hours.

I found a 96 with 3.23 gears in a salvage yard website. It doesnt say if its a posi or not. What are the chances of it being posi? Wasnt the only one in 96 that wasnt posi was the cars like mine that came with 3.08 gears?

Did you get a disk rear or are you staying with drums? If you got a disk setup, make sure you don't forget to buy the emergency brake cables for disk brakes. They are different than your current drum cables.
Good luck with the install. Email me if you have any questions.

I have a problem, i can get a 3.42 rear for 300 with 69000 miles on it, but i can also get one with all the same for 150 but it has almost 100,000 miles on it. Im not sure which one to get? any suggestions?

I'd go with the $150 rear. Just make sure that the pinion seal isn't leaking too bad. Also, change the fluid.

Do you think im taking a chance on a rear with 100,000 miles on it? i mean for 150 dont you think there is areason its so cheap? i just dont know what to do.Its like a 45 minute ride difference between the two so its not like i can just take the time out to go look at it cause its so far away.

Even though it has 100k miles on it, it may be in better shape than the 69k mile rear. Only way to see is to look at it. There is no way of anyone telling which one is in better shape just because of a 31k difference in mileage. Maybe the 69k rear was involved in an accident of some sort...who knows.

I rebuilt my rear with 70,000 miles on it. it depends on how hard the previous owner was on it. I'd go with the cheaper one, considering that at some point down the road you will have to rebuild either one of them.
