Shift knob removal on 2001

ok searched with keywords "shift knob removal" in category Technical and no threads came up. Searched keywords "shift knob" and all that came up were threads about people showing off there shift knobs but nothing on how they removed them so please spare me the "did ya search comments".

now on my 01 M5 the shift knob wont budge. i am planning on buying a new shift knob but i cannot manage to remove the factory one. I tried twisting clockwise and counterclockwise with no results for a good ten mins in each direction. I also tried pulling up with same results as before. My question is how does this thing come off? Is it threaded or does it pull off? Every time i start pulling or twisting it feels like im going to pull the shifter right out of the console. I appreciate your help.

grab it as tight as you can and turn counter clockwise [img]smile.gif[/img] You have to turn it really hard

it feels like im going to rip the shifter out of the console the way im pulling. maybe it needs to be slowly loosened

Got the son *****. It took a few mins of constant twisting but i got it. My main problem was grip. I think the reason i couldnt get it off was because i read a while back somewhere about how some shift knobs are removed by pulling up. Dont know why i assumed that way on my car but thanks for the help.

Up is for automatics. As long as you take the keeper out..... ;)
