  • Are all T-5's

I just got my 1999 Firebird (my first GM car). It has the 3.8L V6. I plan on changinh the shifter. My question is What tranny does it have? Is that too broad of a question or do I need to supply more info on the car?

Hey, I am learning a whole new auto manafacture's product here!

you have a borg-warner t-5 if you have a v6 with a manual trans. you should see the RPO code M49 on the "service parts" sticker on your door panel. it is pretty interesting to write down all those numbers on that sticker and then compare them with the list of GM RPO's in the tech database on this site.

a company called ttcautomotive bought the Borg Warner name a few years ago so many refer to this transmission as a TREMEC T-5.

In the future, if you break it, you can cheaply upgrade to a TR-3550 or TKO-3550 high power 5 speed capable of withstanding some 500-600ftlbs of torque =)

yeah i was aware of that acquisition. however, boaz has a 99 and the 99 service manual specifically uses the name Borg-Warner for the M49 trans. pg 7-26.
:D not trying to be a know-it-all or anything...

        good information though, Dominic.

are you sure? where did you get your information? i've been trying to find out and from who i've talked to (D&D Performance and another forgot the name) said that they believed the input shaft was different and longer and a few other small but major reasons why we couldn't just trade trannys. what have you found out about them?
i was swimming in the carribean. animals were hiding behind the rocks except for the little fish, but they told me the squid\'s trying to talk to me. oink, oink. where is my mind?
