  • Locker vs LSD? Which is cheaper, pros/cons

Basically the title says it. Which is cheaper and what are the pros and cons of each?

I have read that LSDs are better for handling because they still alow a different rate for each side of the axel(like during corning) but if a locker isn't that much different and is cheaper, I'm open to that. Either are obviously better than my stupid open differential.

Also, I bought some 3.08s on here a while back, but I'm seriously considering keeping my 3.23s. I need to check them out, but do you guys think after 142k miles they would be a good option? If not I'll stick with my 5k 3.08s I was gonna transplant.

why do you want 3.08s? land speed record or something?

i think and LSD is the best for all around driving, especially seeing how squirrelly my car gets in the rain. i know it would only be worse with a locker.

james might like to weigh in on this topic having tried both.

The main reason I was wanting the 3.08s is cause it would be an easier swap when I was planning on throwing the 3.8L in my car totally stock (that way the computer would work with it fine).

The second was cause my car has 140k on it (and the 3.23s) and I'm not sure exactly if the ring and pinion are in good enough shape to leave in(I haven't had the time to look yet actually).

It isn't making any noises and runs real nicely, so they might be fine to leave in, esp. since I will be finding a 97 computer and will be getting a lot more stuff done to it(including computer tuning now).

        EDIT:

The reason I'm not to concerned with the 3.08-3.23 ratio difference is cause I plan on putting another cam in, head work, full exhaust, and I'm gonna put a turbo on it. I should have more than enough go with the 3.08s to destroy most cars at that point.

Even with all that expensive work, a cheap mod like new gears would only add on to the speed of your car.

3.08s are not useful in any way unless you plan on doing a lot of cruising. As long as you're going to replace the rear end anyway, you might as well just get an entire rear end with at least 3.42s in them.

Making the computer compatible? If you're going to have a turbocharger in there you're going to need reprogramming anyway!

Yeah the turbocharging is a recent development. The original plan was stock (except for headwork), then a cam, then nitrous, then no nitrous (cause I don't want to fill the bottle -$$$- and I can do the turbo for like a few hundred more than the nitrous.

Yeah the computer is gonna be a little off stock. I want to get it together(cam, heads, exhaust) and run it NA for a little while as I get the turbo stuff together. When the turbo is in, I'll take it to someone in OKC, Tulsa, or Dallas to get it on a dyno and get the computer tuned for what is done to it.

I would love to let Texas Speed do it, but I'm not sure mailing my computer is the best way to go for absolute peak power, I think I'll need a dyno for that. (I'm in no way dissing Texas Speed just so you guys know!)

I might just look for a 3.42 LSD diskbrake rearend with ok miles on it. I really want all three of those, but if I can't get 3.42 but it still meets the LSD diskbrake and low-mid miles, I will go that route and just bolt up.
