  • Help identidying a differential

I am heading to the junkyard in a few hours hoping to find an LSD, and was wondering how I can determine if the differential I find would fit my M5 (3.23 gear) Maro. Is there an easy way to determine if it is 3 series and non-traction control without dismantling the rear end?

I assume I can determine the series by the gearing codes on the door (if it has it) but not too sure about traction control cause I have never been in an fbody with it.

Remember that all Z28s and T/As came with positraction. That will be easiest way to identify.

Well, didn't find anything anyway. Also found most people there know nothing about our cars. I will keep an eye on the for sale section.

          Thanks

were you talking about the auburn clutch type or the torsen gear type?

look in anything with a 7.5" rear end (S10, G-body, F-body) and look for the G80 code if you can get inside the car.

if not, the casting number will start with 3 so right there you know you have the size you need. when you look inside the carrier it should be pretty easy to tell if it's an LSD type or not.

auburn type will have little yellow springs running horizontally inside the diff

torsen type will have planetary gears.
