• 3.73 or 4.10 gears

I am thinking of upgrading my rear end gears. I currently have 3.42 with Zexel Torsen LSD. I want a little more off the line and to be a little quicker in the 1/4 mile.
I guess my first question is: How difficult would it be to change out the 3.42 for higher gears?
Second question is for you guys: Should I get 3.73 or 4.10 gears? The car is not a daily driver and is used mostly at the srtip. It is street driven on occasion and may be driven long distances to go to races (approx 80-200 miles).

It is an automatic with a 2800 stall converter. I will be getting HPTuners so I can adjust the shift points and speedo for the new gears.

Just looking for some input

Thanks

If this is a strip only car, you may want to consider 4.56s. If not, definitely 4.10 over 3.73.

A gear swap is not an easy install. To get it right, I'd have a shop do it. You have to set the pinion up correctly. I'm not sure what to tell you on price, it varies from location to location. Here, it would be about $500-600. But that's Boca Fl. I'm sure it's cheaper about anywhere else. We pay a extra 10 cents a gallon in town. Go 5 miles any direction out of town, it's cheaper.

My rear cost me 285, but I supplied all parts and installed it myself.

Evan, go to jegs.com and get one of those packages which will cost 300 dollars. Includes everything you need. Then get a quote from different shops of the install price. Usually gets going to cost 500 dollars for the gear install which includes that kit.

Actually, the A4 has a better OD gear than the M5.

I was quoted 250-300 to install gears and lsd. I was quoted gears 200, auburn lsd 300, install 250 and kit for 90.

I will find a used zt and get new gears to be sure they have broken in properly when i do it.I have heard very loud whines from some i know jumped the gas as soon as installed, and no noticable whine from those broken inperoperly and new gears.

4.10s and a bigger stall ;)

If you were going up to 3.73s may as well go for 4.10s

Ohhhh I did not even think of the stall with new gears.
Would the 2800 stall be a problem with 4.10 gears?

It probably won't stall quite as high. Make sure that your brakes are in good working order, and wait and see.

if ur worried about gas i've actually heard that even though the a4 has 1 less gear then the manuel guys it still cruises at about 200 rpms lower because of the way its set up

is this true?

I have had 3.73's in my car since 2002.. Now I am going with 4.10's.. I have a 5 speed but with the 3.73's my gas miles on the highway were the same as it was with my stock 3.23's.. 4.10's hopefully will give my car more of a punch..
