  • is lsd worth it without getting new gears

i was talking to my mechanic today and i asked him about lsd and gears he said it isnt worth getting the gears because you have to go through the trouble of recalabrating but he said that i can just get lsd with no problems is it worth it just to get the lsd will it plant my car better to the ground or is that what the gears are for

You have 3.08's now right? Yes replace them with 3.42's or 3.73's. One of the best mods I ever did. be ready to do some suspension work tho, I got horrible wheel hop with the lsd.

what firefighter said... going from 3.08s to 3.73s can drop a BUNCH off of your ET if you get the proper tuning behind it. a rear set installation can go anywhere from 150 to 500 depending on to whom you take it; mine cost 300.

but if you just want to leave two black stripes, go for the LSD alone. you can install that in your driveway.

He would need a spaces to put the lsd in with the 3.08's because they are not as thick. Look on ebay for a cheap set of gears.

Like FireFighter hinted at in his last post, with 3.08s you cannot (easily) install an OEM LSD without upgrading the gears. 3.08 gears are Series 2, but the carrier is Series 3.

Defintely get gears and a LSD. You will need some tuning for speedo recalibrating and shift points but it isn't a hassle (just pricey).

Options for custom tuning: Texas-Speed, Westers Garage, HP Tuners Software.

If you just want to recalibrate your speedo you can get a Tech Edge speedo recalibrator. However, this will not change your shift points.

where do you guys find these v8 rear ends (which seems like you assume they all have 3.42's for gears) so easily. I couldnt find a single one to be had locally and even abroad its no easy task... so then you have to pay for shipping and still have a half worn out rear-end.

Yes, the dealership is another option but it is really hit or miss whether you can find a dealer that will do it because there are legal issues with flashing your cars PCM with a different VIN.

For a dealer to do it they have to flash your PCM with a VIN of a car that has the Y87 option.
