  • 12 Bolt Rear End?

My rear end is whining and I figured if I'm going to lay down some cash i want to be bullet proof instead of having the same crap I have in it now.

I was looking on ftpp.net and saw the SLP 12 Bolt rear end set up. I'd like to get it with some 3.73's and the auburn LS.

Has anyone here done this swap on a V6? What mods have to be done to the axle? Welding and minor fab shouldnt be a problem.

Will my brakes work on the axle?
What problems should I look foward to at installation?
Will an Aluminum driveshaft off an LS1 camaro work?
What mods to put on the drive shaft? Its bolt on isnt it?
The website didnt say much about what had to be done to put the 12 bolt on other than weling and somefabrication...?

Unless you're planning on modding the hell out of your car, just stick with a stock rear end.

Moser makes complete 12 bolt rear ends for our cars. Strange makes Ford 9" rearends for our cars as well. The ford 9" also can be made lighter if you upgraded the center housing to an aluminum one. you will have to get a custom driveshaft made if you upgrade to either of these.

The cheapest 12 bolt out there is from LS1speed.com.. Your looking at 30 spline axles, Eaton posi, 3.73's, chrome cover, about 2100.00 dollars.. Ad on your abs is 100.00, you brake backing plates is another 170.00, 33 spline is another 100.00, and a T/A cover is 140.00.. so around 2600.00 all together... Then shipping is anywere from 80-150.00.. Your stock D/S or LS1 D/S will work with the yoke that the 12bolt comes with.. If you opt for the upgraded yoke then you will need a shorter D/S..

You would probably be better off having your 10 bolt rebuilt. Get a good LSD, new gears, a diff cover, weld the axle tubes, and pray.

Pray for what?? With 220 rwtq he is not going to be breaking rears.. I have broke 2 but thats from launching on a stock rear end with Nitrous at the track.. 415rwtq with a stock diff and no T/A cover isnt a good idea.. I say build up a 10bolt.. ZT heavy duty or TR2, Good Motive gears 3.73's- 4.10's, Moser axles, and a T/A cover.. Thats what I bought.. Should be good to 500 rwhp.. I wont be launching on spray no more so It will probably last forever.. and another thing is have you heard of the old saying a whining rear end is a strong rear end?? Just because it whines doesnt mean anything is wrong.. My buddies 98 Z28 with heads cam intake and a 150 shot still has his stock rear in it.. That car has been 10.6's with 1.6 60ft's and it whines.. its been whining for 4 years now..

I've got a Moser 12 bolt in my car, 33 spline axles, Detroit true trac, 1350 yoke, etc. I had to shorten my driveshaft 3/4" because the nose is longer on the 12 bolt, however some people with automatics have gotten away with stock length driveshafts. Since the manuals hit the drivetrain harder, they're more likely to hit the rear bearing in the transmission and tear it up with the stock length DS. It might be overkill but I guarantee I wont break it with the V6 and I also have lots of room to grow with it. If I want to put a real motor in it someday, its already got the good stuff.

you will not need a 12 bolt until you get up into the 400hp/tq range. until then stick with the ten bold they are more efficient than 12's.
