  • help...where the heck did second gear go?

so an odd thing happened last night.
i started out from a stoplight in my firebird (auto-3800, year-2000, miles-approx 70k). the car went thru 1st gear, but wouldn't shift into second at all. even with my foot lightly on the gas, it wouldn't shift out, so i took my foot off the gas so it would shift. It shifted into third. somehow, i have no second gear. if you're on the highway and you kick it, normally it would shift down into second and take off.... but now it tries to shift into second...but second is missing...so it's like you threw it into neutral. the engine just revs... so you take your foot totally out of it, and it'll shift into 3rd or 4th. even if you start off the line like a grandma, it won't automatically shift into second. it's like i have the gear shift selector in "1". then as soon as i take my foot off the gas, it'll shift into 3rd or 4th....i have to baby it.
plus, when i'm parked, and i shift into reverse, there's a big "clunk" and i hear a knocking coming from the rear end, and the car kind of shudders/shakes/lurches in reverse.

please tell me someone else has experienced this, and knows what's going on.

is it possible that the throttle body in the trans just needs flushed (i doubt it...but that would be nice)....or something more along the lines of a tourqe converter???

this sucks. i love my car, and now it's not running corrrectly :(

Sounds like it time for a rebuild, this is why the 4L60E is a bad trans IMO.

that's not what i wanted to hear :(
i do all my own repairs...but i've never messed with an automatic transmission b4...nor do i know if i want to.
do you have any idea what a rebuild like this would cost me?

had mine completly rebuilt for $1600 when I blew it up. that included the transgo shift kit too so it could be a little less without it.
