  • Can Someone Help Me Pull My Head Out of My Rear?

My mechanic sayed I have some noise comming from the differential. He thinks its most likely a pinion bearing and a carrier bearing.

He said a rebuild would cost $900.

I am going to continue to drive it, untill it gets worse. Its not bad now.

Should I just swap the whole rear axle?
How much should a rebuild cost?
What is replaced in a rebuild?
Is there anything I can do myself?

I have searched. But I don't know what the hell it all means.

    I got the y78 package.
So I am sure I have 3.42's and a POSI.

I am having the fluid changed. Other than that what should I do?

$900 and he's just replacing all the bearings and seals? I spent $7-800total rebuilding mine and that included the posi ($100), gears ($200), reluctor ring($20), $120 full rebuild 'kit' and about $350 in labor.

You can find you a 10-bolt rear and replace it yourself for a fraction of that price, that sounds WAY high!

How easy is the swap? Do I just get the whole rear assembly?

        How much should I pay?

</font>[/QUOTE]Check out the for sale section here, the for sale section on LS1tech and on LS1.com.. You will need to find out if you have 3 channel or 4 channel abs.. The way to tell is on a 3 channel there is a sensor at the top of the pumpkin for the reluctor ring, on a 4 channel there is no sensor at the top of the pumpkin cause the reluctor rings are on the axles themself.. Its not that bad to swap out rear ends.. Need to take off the D/S, Tq arm, Shocks, PHB's, Sway bar, Brake lines and unplug sensors, and LCA's.. The price range is anywere from 200-500 depending on if it is a stock rear or not..
